Last week, 16-year-old climate activist Greta Thunberg set sail in a zero-emissions boat across the Atlantic Ocean, heading to New York where she is due to attend the UN Climate Action Summit in September.
Accompanied by her father, Svante Thunberg, and filmmaker Nathan Grossman, the young Swede is making her journey towards America on a solar-system operated boat, Malizia II, which includes two hydro-generators permanently situated at the stern of the boat.
In order to stay true Thunberg’s message of sustainability and environmental protection, the boat’s engine will be turned off for the entire duration of the journey (except for in the event of an emergency).
Malizia II’s official website now features a live-tracker which allows viewers to follow Thunberg’s movements as she makes her way to the shores of New York, as well as the strength and direction of wind currents.
In addition to donating and operating the sailboat, Team Malizia will be conducting data-collection about the condition of the ocean (an endeavor in which Thunberg will also participate). “During all our sailing trips and races, we try to actively contribute to ocean research, particularly the impact of climate change on marine environments, by measuring CO2 and other sea surface data with our onboard laboratory,” says Boris Herrmann, skipper of Team Malizia. “We publish the data collected and their results which are made available to the public and scientists.”
