Reconnect with underwater wildlife

As a human species, we’ve grown alarmingly disconnected from Earth. We go about our lives as if we were visitors on this planet who are separate from it and its creatures and are free to subject it to our every whim.

The truth is that we, humans, are inextricably connected to nature, and share its fate. It is our failure to recognise that fact that perpetuates our over-exploitation of resources and cruelty to animals, and prevents us from effectively tackling the ecological collapse we precipitated.

Sea Change Project is a South African non-profit organisation working to connect people to the wild in general, and specifically to the underworld of The Great African Seaforest - the world’s only forest of giant bamboo kelp, which protects thousands of species.

Sea Change Project is comprised of a group of scientists, storytellers, journalists, and filmmakers, who are dedicated to the ocean’s preservation and to the goal of encouraging as many people as possible to connect to it. They do so through various methods of storytelling - including a book and a recent, well-worth watching Netflix documentary film titled My Octopus Teacher - exhibitions, cultural events, and a budding education programme.

“We tell stories that connect people to the wild, motivating them to become part of the regeneration of our planet,” Sea Change Project states on its website. “Through our work we have started a movement of emotional ecology, where people feel a meaningful connection to wild places and the animals that live in them. Our goal is to protect South Africa’s marine environment by making the Great African Seaforest a global icon.”

According to the organisation, kelp forests have declined as much as 40 per cent over the last several decades, and 98 per cent of the territory surrounding The Great African Seaforest is currently slated for mining. It is only when enough of us will come to rekindle our connection to nature and wildlife, and do away with our illusionary sense of separation from them, when concrete action will be taken to stop the destruction of such environmental gems. Sea Change Project is among the crucial initiatives helping to facilitate this process of reconnection to nature.
