Across the globe, pollution continues to ravage natural resources as well as human health, particularly in low and middle-income countries and regions. Recent statistics indicate that toxic pollutants at contaminated sites adversely affect the health of over 200 million people around the world.
Alas, relatively little attention is given by the international community and world media to the gravity and scope of pollution-induced illnesses and deaths.
Established in 1999, Pure Earth is a nonprofit organisation working to solve pollution problems in low and middle-income communities around the world, collaborating with local figures and community leaders as well as governments and international organisations.
From Asia and Europe to Africa and South America, Pure Earth engage in detailed and methodical mapping and inventorying of toxic hot-spots, and produce reports about the types of pollutants present at the site, the scope of the problem, whether the pollution is ‘active’ or remaining from previous activity, the local geographical and political factors involved, and the type of effect it has on the local community.
Pure Earth lead various types of cleaning missions from small to large-scale clean-ups, incorporating new and advanced technology into the process. All the while, Pure Earth’s team collaborates with local actors and ensures that throughout the clean-up process, as well as in its aftermath, the community is involved in creating sustainable solutions and is self-sufficient.
Thus far, the organisation has conducted over 100 clean-up in 27 countries.
