The media in Spain, a country with more than 700.000 members of the Romani people, reveals to threaten the Spanish Romani community by highlighting the undesired stereotypes of this community. Stereotypes of Spanish society, as in many countries in Europe, is that Roma people don’t want to work, have no education, nor are they interested in following the rules for social coexistence.
This type of media thus distorts the truth about one of Europe`s greatest minorities and labels and generalizes Roma people as thugs, thiefs and outlaws.
The Fundación Secretariado Gitano (FSG) develops all kinds of actions that contribute in achieving equal treatment of Roma persons, improving their living conditions, preventing all forms of discrimination. An Example: In 2014 FSG has published guides to help journalists approaching the news related with the Romani community without prejudices and stigmatizing speech.
