Last month, President Trump reversed an Obama era policy that banned the usage and manufacturing of antipersonnel landmines by the U.S. military.
Trump’s recent policy effectively gives the U.S. military free rein to further contaminate lands across the world with landmines and risk the lives of millions of innocent civilians.
According to data by the United Nations, 78 countries are presently contaminated with landmines, and between 15,000 and 20,000 people are killed and many more maimed each year as a result. It is further estimated that 80 per cent of the victims are civilians, and that children are the most affected group.
A petition launched by Humanity & Inclusion calls on the United States to immediately ban the usage, production, and acquisition of antipersonnel landmines and takes steps to join the 1997 Mine Ban Treaty - to which 164 countries are already party.
“President Trump: Abandon your landmine policy! Don't empower our forces to increase the use of anti-personnel landmines!” the petition states.
The petition has so far garnered nearly 50,000 signatures.
Please help them reach their target of 55,000 signatures by adding your name and demand justice from the American government.
The horrors inflicted by landmines affect innocent people - men, women, and primarily children - across the globe. This matter is urgent, and it concerns us all.
