Education remains, to this day, a complex and highly-contested issue in Brazil. Home to more than 200 million people who live in a wide variety of locations - ranging from densely populated urban centres to remote communities living in nature - Brazil has thus far failed to provide equal and fair access to quality education.
Millions of children living in poverty throughout the country are, to this day, deprived of proper education, and governmental investment of resources in education trails far behind the average of wealthier nations.
An ongoing legislative effort to significantly increase the amount of resources allocated to education - including the maintenance of school buildings, investment per student and teachers’ salaries - strikes many in Brazil as a possible beacon of positive change. Yet, the prospective bill is expected to encounter a fair share of hurdles, and, in the meantime, millions of children across the country are in need of immediate educational and economic solutions.
EduMais is a non-profit organisation providing free, high-quality education to underprivileged children and teenagers in Rio de Janeiro.
Established in 2016, the organisation currently operates 9 educational programs designed to assist high-risk youngsters in the Pavão-Pavãozinho and Cantagalo favelas. The programs include English, extracurricular English, web and game design, after school programs, education-based football, entrepreneurship, courses guiding youths on how to enter the john market, as well as exchange programs and summer camps.
In addition to enhancing youths’ academic abilities, EduMais works to provide them with social and emotional skills that will ensure their success, steer them away from poverty and violence, and help them improve their communities.
EduMais relies on the support of donors and volunteers to keep its operations going. Please visit their website to read more about their work, learn about the various volunteer opportunities they offer, and make a donation.
EduMais has launched an emergency COVID-19 relief fund in order to meet the urgent needs of children and their families who are struggling to get by during the pandemic, and provide them with necessary supplies like food and sanitation products.
“Due to COVID-19, our immediate concern is the health and well-being of our students and their families. The congested space of the favelas makes social distancing impossible. In addition, the economic impacts of the coronavirus are particularly severe in these communities. Many families have lost all sources of income,” the organisation states on its website.
