The smell in Beirut's streets these days is so horrendous one can hardly breath. Due to the general inability of the Lebanese government to agree where to dump the capital's waste, the country is left with mounting piles of rubbish in the streets. A mass protest broke off last Saturday in Beirut, hundreds of protestors were attacked by the police with tear gas, rubber bullets and water cannons. The activists were not only protesting against the stinking piles of rubbish in front of their homes but the general dysfunction of the political system.
The Green Line Association is a non-governmental association which tackles environmental problems in Lebanon caused by political corruption and division due to regional and local conflicts. The NGO exists since 1991, when a group of professionals from the American University of Beirut decided to translate their concern about the post-war devastated cultural, human and natural environment into an organized action. Their goal is to raise public awareness for environmental problems in Lebanon and contribute towards a scientific framework for a sustainable environmental management policy.
