Act against Iran’s oppression of its own people

Iranians today face multiple concurring predicaments - tightening economic sanctions led by the United States that have all but impoverished the population, a global pandemic that wreaks havoc across the country, and a brutal regime that stifles dissent and violates the human rights of citizens. 

In its 2020 report on Iran, Human Rights Watch stated that, “Iran’s judiciary dramatically increased the cost of peaceful dissent, sentencing dozens of human rights defenders to decades-long prison sentences,” adding that “Repressive domestic security agencies, in particular the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ (IRGC) Intelligence Organization, continue to suppress civil society activists, such as detained environmentalists, including through reported abuse and torture in detention.” 

In a recent speech at the Bundestag, Omid Nouripour, a German politician of the Alliance '90/The Greens, laid out several examples of the atrocities committed by the Itanian government against its own people, stating that: “When children are executed, women who refuse to wear headscarves are tortured, homosexuals are persecuted, conservationists arrested, Kurds banned teaching their own language, Baloching humanitarian aid after natural disasters and Bahai systematically denied access to education only injustice wins.”

The Center for Human Rights in Iran (CHRI) is a non-governmental, non-partisan organisation based in New York City working to defend and promote human rights in Iran. 

The organisation is comprised of a team of journalists, researchers, lawyers, activists, writers, multimedia specialists and advocates from across the globe who are dedicated to shedding light on the human rights violations committed by the Iranian regime and fighting for the rights and freedoms of people in Iran. 

CHRI engages in extensive research and documentation of human rights violations and acts of aggression against the Iranian people, relying on primary sources from within the country and focusing on incidents that frequently go unnoticed by the global media. 

CHRI translates such research into press releases, articles, and in-depth reports that it spreads across international media channels (in both English and Farsi) and utilises in its advocacy efforts on behalf of the Iranian people. 

As part of its advocacy work, CHRI engages with both national governments and international organisations, such as the United Nations, in order to familiarise them with its findings and pressure them to take concrete action to protect the human rights of Iranians.
